In today’s “quick fix culture,” athletes at all stages of competition are familiar with dietary supplements. And, many athletes believe that the more they take, the better they will perform. However, dietary supplements can pose risks. In this course, you will gain an awareness of the complex supplement landscape, recognize potential dangers and red flags, encourage healthy nutrition choices, and learn how to educate your athletes and their parents on how to minimize their risk, should they choose to use supplements.
During the exploration of the module, you will learn to:
- Understand your role as a coach when it comes to educating athletes and parents.
- Recognize what makes a product a dietary supplement and their potential dangers and red flags.
- Realize the prevalence of use and common reasons young athletes may use supplements.
- Identify the steps to minimize risk if supplements are in consideration for use.
Seat time: Approximately 21 minutes of seat time, plus video components. The learning path for this course includes a pre-course questionnaire, course, and post-course questionnaire.
Evaluation: You will be evaluated on the assignments within the module through knowledge check points and a course summary quiz. A score of at least 80% on the summary quiz is required to successfully complete the module.
TrueSport Coaching Field Experience (optional): Complete all four TrueSport Coaching Education Program online modules as a pre-requisite to completing the TrueSport Coaching Field Experience. Field Experience materials are included with all course registrations.
